Newcastle Knight's Todd Polglase hangs up the boots
In action ... Todd Polglase
January 29, 2008 12:00am
TODD Polglase has finally succumbed to a recurring hamstring injury with the Newcastle utility announcing his NRL retirement today.
Polglase, 26, broke the news to teammates and coaching staff at training this morning.
"I would like to thank the club for its patience and for giving me every opportunity to overcome my injury, but I had to make a decision that was right for the future," Polglase said.
"I intend to take some time away from football and consider my options before moving onto the next chapter of my life."
A Newcastle junior, Polglase played with the Bulldogs and South Sydney before returning home to play with the Knights last year.
Knights coach Brian Smith said Polglase's retirement would leave a void in the club's senior ranks.
"It's a sad day. We haven't just lost a good player, he's a tremendously popular player - a real footy player's player," Smith said.
