Shock as Newton quits Knights
May 28, 2007
NEWCASTLE Knights' day of horror in Brisbane has been followed by the shock exit of prop Clint Newton.
Newton, who played his 100th game in Sunday's record 71-6 loss to the Brisbane Broncos, asked for and was granted an immediate release from the Knights to consider offers from English Super League club Harlequins and rival NRL clubs.
The 25-year-old, whose contract was to end after this season, dropped the bombshell announcement at an emotional press conference at his home, saying he had been told by Knights coach Brian Smith he was not required at the club next season.
"Obviously it's a pretty hard day for me, to ask for a release, but this is a tough game and it makes it tougher when you're not happy and right now I'm not happy," Newton said.
"Everyone wants to feel wanted and that's been the biggest thing for me to come to terms with.
"Nobody's expecting contracts to be handed out on a silver platter ... but, in saying that, my best option right now is to try and commit myself to another team.
"It came to head through a conversation between myself and the coach a couple of weeks ago ... all I know is I officially knew at that point where I stood."
Smith denied a decision had been made on Newton's future at the club and said he hadn't had a problem with the Country representative.
"We hadn't reached that point of making that decision," Smith said.
"I've dealt with Clint on a daily basis since I've been here ... and there's never been any sort of problem apart from the usual things where coaches point out to players what they need to do."
Knights boss Stephen Crowe said Newton had requested the release for "personal reasons".
"It's only round 10, there's quite a number of players we haven't made offers to," Crowe said.
"We haven't re-signed anybody and we haven't signed anybody from outside the club so it's a bit hard to finalise plans when we're yet to start our recruitment process."
Golfing legend and passionate Newcastle supporter Jack Newton, the father and manager of Clint, hinted at deeper problems at the Knights as he took aim at the club.
"I think there's first grade jerseys getting handed out all over the place at the moment like a packet of Smarties," he said.
"I think when you've got local boys and blokes who have the passion about the jumper and the club, (it's) more about the culture of our club.
"When you start bringing players in from all over the place, is our culture under threat?"
In other Knights news, Luke MacDougall will join his older brother Adam at the Knights until the end of 2009 after the 25-year-old utility back was released from the Dragons.
"He's keen to play alongside his brother and we think they bring the best out in each other," Crowe said.
