Michael Hagan Post Match Media Conference - Round 622 April 2007
Q) TO NATHAN CAYLESS FIRST OF ALL - WAS IT ONE THAT GOT AWAY?
A) Yes, I think so. We made way too many errors in the second half trying to play a bit too fancy instead of running straight and getting to our kick. We let ourselves down today. They are the games we have to win if we want to do any good in the comp this year. We have to learn something from this, but it is definitely one we should have won.
Q) NATHAN IT LOOKED AT ONE STAGE LIKE IT WAS A CONTEST TO SEE WHO COULD MAKE THE MOST ERRORS?
A) It was a tough physical game. The ball was slippery out there and I suppose it made it exciting. It was just very disappointing.
Q) HOW CRUCIAL WAS THAT TRY BEFORE HALF TIME?
A) What do you reckon?
Q) AT ONE POINT IN THE SECOND HALF YOU WERE IN A POSITION TO TAKE A FIELD GOAL AND TIM SMITH PUT UP A KICK INSTEAD - WAS THERE A DECISION NOT TO TAKE A FIELD GOAL AT THAT POINT?
A) No, we were set up for it on that play. We took a different option but we didn't get ourselves in a position to have a good shot. It is hard to kick them from the sideline. Timmy took the next best option and it was a great kick that found Eric but we made an error on the back of it. They were desperate and scrambled well. If Eric scores the try then you people will be saying what a great kick it was.
Q) WHAT DID YOU THINK MICHAEL?
A) I think we were the dominant side in the first half for sure and I thought our forwards dominated things in terms of metres gained and those sorts of things, our play the ball speed was quicker in the first half but we certainly invited them back into it on the stroke of half time which was disappointed. We defended our line really well in the second half I thought considering how many cracks we gave them and they ended up scoring on the 4th or 5th crack. We had a chance to hit the front but we took a poor option in going left and not kicking a field goal. It was a fairly painful lesson for some of the young blokes in the team to learn, and probably some of the old blokes as well for that matter. I can't fault the intensity or the effort. We came here today to find out where we are at and we can be reasonably happy that we are not too far behind them. I would have preferred to have been in front on the scoreboard.
Q) YOU OBVIOUSLY RATE THEM AS A TEAM TO BEAT?
A) Yes, when they are on they are a physical side and you are going to have to work hard to beat them which I think we did today.
Q) FINCHY WAS REALLY GOOD TODAY?
A) I was happy with him and he should be too. His first couple of touches were great - he set up a try and scored one himself. His defence was great on the edge there and that is something that we have worked very hard on with him.
Q) STEVE FOLKES TALKED ABOUT THE OBSTRUCTION CALLS AND SUGGESTED FINCHY PLAYED FOR THEM?
A) I don't know about that - I think that would be a very obvious example of an obstruction under the current rules. I don't know that Finchy could have done much else with big Willie running at you very fast.
Q) YOU'VE BEEN COACHING JARRYD HAYNE FOR A LITTLE WHILE NOW - IS THAT ACTION WHERE HE SHOOK THE GOALPOSTS SOMETHING HE HAS DONE BEFORE?
A) No, it is not something we have practiced. It is something we can talk to him about I guess.
