Michael Hagan Post Match Media Conference - Round 24

27 August 2007

Q) MICHAEL YOU MUST BE VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE PERFORMANCE?
A) I think the players are disappointed. It was a game we needed to win and we were not good enough to do that.

Q) IS IT TIME FOR CHANGES?
A) I don't think we are at that stage. There is a tremendous work ethic in the team. Defensively we had to defend 27 sets in the first half and we kept them to nil in the second half and they have some quality players in their team and they were a lot better than they were last week, which we knew they would be. I don't think there is any question on the effort, but we certainly need to improve the execution, and that was the disappointing thing for us.

Q) WHAT IS YOUR THEORY ON THE POOR EXECUTION?
A) I'm really not sure just at the moment. We had some poor options at times and our kicking game was awful at times. We put ourselves under too much pressure and the workload we had to do was too great.

Q) WHAT OPTIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR 6 AND 7?
A) I don't think the options are going to change. We know we have a lot of work to do between now and Sunday, and from that respect things have not changed too much. As to a home semi final, that's another matter, the players understand that, the Club understands that but it does not change the fight we are in and what we want to get done.

Q) WHEN DID YOU SEE THINGS GOING WRONG?
A) We started poorly when we had a few attacking sets early on where we came up with some poor options and in the end they got one try up the middle and one from a kick - I thought we defended a lot of their stuff extremely well and there was a lot of desperation out there. I thought at 12 - 6 we were getting ourselves back in the game and had our chances to generate some pressure but we couldn't sustain it.

Q) YOU HAD A BIG BREAK LEADING INTO THE GAME AND YOU HAVE PLAYED POORLY OF BIG BREAKS BEFORE - IS THERE ANY CORRELATIONT HERE?
A) We are looking into that stuff all the time. I don't think it is ideal but we are not offering it as an excuse and the players will not be offering it as an excuse either.

Q) HOW IS IAN HINDMARSH?
A) I think he is improving - there are some good signs there.

Q) HIS BROTHER IS ON REPORT HOW DID YOU SEE THAT?
A) The lift? Did not see it properly. But again his performance tonight was phenomenal in what he did for 80 minutes.

Q) YOU SAID THE PLAYERS NEEDED TO WIN TONIGHT. WAS THAT TO MAKE THE TOP 4 OR THE TOP 8?
A) I think it is all about playing well and trying to win games. That clearly wasn't the case tonight.

Q) IS IT FAIR TO SAY YOU HAVE THE SHAKES?
A) I don't know about that. I think every team is under pressure this time of the year and you can't escape that. You need to win games to be there. The players are well aware of that without stating the obvious.
