Michael Hagan Post Match Media Conference - Round 20

29 July 2007

Q) DO YOU THINK THE BETTER TEAM WON?
A) Yes, I think they did. We've spoken at length after the game about a few things that let us down and maybe a few calls that went against us, but their second half was excellent. They had to play well to beat us and they did.

Q) IT WAS A HIGH STANDARD GAME?
A) Yes it was. There was a lot of points in the game because both teams are capable of scoring points. I agree that it was really good game of footy to be honest.

Q) WHAT WERE THOSE AREAS THAT LET YOU DOWN?
A) The start to our second halves the last 3 weeks have not been ideal and we conceded 2 quick tries in the first 10 minutes today that got them back in the hunt. That is something that is a concern and we have spoken about it - our attitude to the start of the second half and we need to sort it out which I am sure we can do. I think also no question that we missed both Cayless and Cordoba who have been really good for us of late. We have another big job to do this Friday night and we will be without them then as well.

Q) WHAT WERE THE REST OF THE THOUGHTS STRAIGHT AFTER THE GAME?
A) Well look, at the end of the day Manly are a very good footy side. They control things well and have quality players. They sit second and we sit third and it was a good indication of why they are where they are.

Q) YOU OBVIOUSLY THINK THERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD TAKE OUT OF THE GAME?
A) There have been things to learn out of the past few weeks - that is that if you drop your intensity and focus then points will follow - against the good teams they will put you away.

Q) DO YOU THINK THE VIDEO REFEREE SHOULD HAVE COME IN RIGHT AT THE END AFTER PJ'S BUST?
A) There was some suggestion it should have been a drop out return which we could have done with and the ref's call decision was another difficult one but we have no complaints.

Q) FOR THOSE ONES MICHAEL THAT ARE OBVIOUS - IT HIT BEN SMITH IN THE KNEE - DO YOU THINK THE VIDEO REFEREE SHOULD BE ABLE TO STEP IN?
A) Absolutely and I have always felt that. We have to get the obvious ones right, but if everyone sees it, including the video referee then he should be able to tip it.

Q) WHAT ABOUT THE VIDEO REFEREE AWARDING A TRY TO JARRYD HAYNE IN THE FIRST HALF WHEN THERE WAS A POSSIBLE OBSTRUCTION?
A) The fact that he ran straight through the line and didn't actually impede anyone and I think the defenders had enough opportunity to shut the play down from the outside in or the inside out. I wasn't confident but I wasn't sure it was not a try.

Q) DO YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT PARTICULAR REFEREE THAT WOULD REQUIRE A PHONE CALL?
A) No, there were a number of issues after the Souths game and then again last week. I talk to Robert Finch most weeks if there is something I'm not sure about and I'm sure some of those examples will be raised.

Q) BUT YOU HAVE NO REAL COMPLAINTS?
A) No I don't think so. They had an ounce of luck like that kick down the left hand side that Jarryd was hoping would go out - it stayed in, got a repeat set and scored a try. They got some luck but they were good enough to use it.

Q) WHERE CAN PARRAMATTA GO FROM HERE?
A) We said a few weeks ago we were in a particularly bad block of 4 games - we are three games through it and we have been pretty good. The Dogs on Friday will be tough and again will give us another indication of how we are going. There's a long way to go and we will get better when we get the likes of Cayless and Cordoba back. They'll only miss another game each.
