Manly Warringah Sea Eagles Weekend Review20/03/2007
By Jack Bartlett
In a mixed weekend for the Sea Eagles, three out of five grades were triumphant with two sides left disappointed with missed opportunities to make early dents in their competitions.
Harold Matthews Round 4
The Harold Matthews team made it two wins in a row with a hard earned away win against the newly formed Central Coast Storm at Mingara Sports Ground. William Hopoate continued his good form, scoring two tries, bringing his tally to four from four games. Backrowers Joel Hayden and Brendan Lahoud scored their first tries of the season, completing a 22-8 victory. The under 16s sit fifth on the ladder, on six points, equal with Penrith and St George. They look to make it four wins from five starts this Saturday when they face Western Sydney at Ringsose Oval.
Central Coast Storm: 8 (Tries: Cox, Lake)
Manly Warringah Sea Eagles: 22 (Tries: Hopoate 2, Hayden, Lahoud. Goals: Ala 3 )
SG Ball Round 4
Kieran Foran, John Grey and Mitchell Jowett all scored four-pointers but the Central Coast recorded their first win of the season against a Manly side looking for their second. Storm fullback Grant Nelson crossed for his third try in three matches. Brother Matt scored his first try of the season and kicked two goals to complete a 20-14 win for Central Coast. Manly are tenth, on equal points with Balmain, North Sydney and Central Coast. The Sea Eagles this weekend face a Western Sydney side desperately hoping to register their first win of season.
Central Coast Storm: 20 (Tries: G Nelson, Voysey, M Nelson, Vaotuua. Goals: M Nelson 2)
Manly Warringah Sea Eagles: 14 (Tries: Foran, Grey, Jowett. Goals: Thomas)
Jersey Flegg Round 1
Brookvale Oval's first match of the year pitted the Sea Eagles against the Canberra Raiders and although many expected the a tight game, Manly were held to nil by a Raiders side determined to start their campaign off with a win after a mixed season last year. Manly had numerous chances during the game to score but the Raiders fended off every attack until the 16-0 victory was secured. A visit to Cambelltown Stadium awaits the Flegg side on Sunday where they hope to lift themselves from the bottom half of the ladder by defeating a Western Suburbs outfit coming off the bye.

Canberra: 16
Premier League Round 1
A match played in very wet conditions has seen Manly beat Western Suburbs by 14 points. Michael Bani scored a try in each half, with Jack Afamasaga, Sean Meaney and Matt Ballin all on the score sheet in the 22-8 victory. For Western Suburbs, it was too many unforced errors too often. They posed little threat to the Sea Eagles and the tries they did score came too late in the game to give them any chance of a comeback. On Saturday, at Leichhardt Oval, Manly have the chance to make it two wins from two against a Balmain side who narrowly defeated Cronulla 34-28 last start.
Manly Warringah Sea Eagles: 22 (Tries: Bani 2, Afamasaga, Meaney, Ballin. Goals: Barrow 4)
Western Suburbs Magpies: 14 (Tries: Gallant, Ryan, Wara. Goals: Greaves)
NRL Round 1
The Canberra Raiders came to Brookvale hoping to beat Manly and by doing so, prove that they wouldn't be competition pushovers this season. As a result of the Sea Eagles' 32-6 thrashing, it is unlikely that they proved that to anyone. Jamie Lyon's two tries on debut for the Sea Eagles were one of many highlights in a match where Michael Robertson, Luke Williamson, Steve Bell and Jason King all scored for the maroon and white. Even though Lyon played at centre for most of the match, the combination he is forming with Matt Orford is a definite positive, with Lyon on the end of an Orford grubber to post his first try. The Raiders' only try, early in the second half, to fullback Marshall Chalk was possibly the only positive for Canberra while Manly sit atop the NRL ladder after only one round and look ahead to the next, where they face Wests Tigers at Leichhardt, minus Steve Matai and Steve Menzies who are both out due to injury.
Manly Warringah Sea Eagles: 32 (Tries: Lyon 2, Robertson, Williamson, Bell, King. Goals: Orford 1, Lyon 3)
Canberra Raiders: 6 (Tries: Chalk. Goals: Dobson)
