Eels take up soccer

By Jack Devenish 28 November 2007 - 12:22PM The Parramatta Eels pulled on the football boots for training on Friday, but not for Rugby League. The Eels attended the International Goalkeepers Academy at Blacktown Olympic Park, under the instruction of former socceroo and current Sydney FC goalkeeping coach Jim Fraser. The session was conducted as a part of the team's pre-season strength and conditioning training with a focus on increasing the players agility. Team members were put through their paces and taught how to catch the ball, fall to the ground correctly, play a game and have a penalty shoot out. Nathan Cayless and Luke Burt showed promising signs of developing into Australia's next goal keepers and Joe Gulavao broke the record for the longest kick. Eels go to Jim's goalie school Brad Earl 27Nov07 PARRAMATTA Eels players donned goalkeeping gloves for a training session with a difference last week. A fortnight into pre-season training, the NRL team went to the International Goalkeepers Academy run by Jim Fraser at Blacktown Olympic Park. The former Socceroo had a stint on the coaching staff of the now-defunct Parramatta Power when one of the keepers was Liam Reddy, older brother of Eels player Joel.
