Eels Name Four New Faces For Round One
Tuesday 11 March 2008
20 year old Taulima Tautai will become the 698th player to wear the Blue and Gold jersey when he makes his first grade debut for the Pirtek Parramatta Eels against the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium on Saturday.
Tautai has been named alongside Krisnan Inu in the centres for the Eels Telstra Premiership season opener, which kicks off at 5.30pm.
Also making their first appearance for the Eels in the top grade are interchange players Joe Galuvao (no. 699), Matthew Keating (no. 700), and Brendan Oake (no. 701).
“If anything the selections reflect the strength of our top 25,” head coach Michael Hagan said.
“All four players called upon to make their debuts have had excellent pre-seasons and all have shown solid trial form.
“Taulima was one of our best against the Panthers in Albury while Joe, Matt and Brendan have all played strongly in two trials.
“It’s also a good result for Parramatta’s development programs, with Taulima, Matt and Brendan all coming through our junior and lower grade ranks and into the NRL.”
In other good news for the Eels, international second rower Nathan Hindmarsh has fully recovered from knee surgery and will take his place in the starting line up.
Saturday’s match kicks off at 5.30pm at ANZ Stadium, Sydney Olympic Park, and follows the Toyota Cup clash between the Eels and Bulldogs at 3pm.

Hayne In For Injured Inu, Hauraki & Paulo Return
Tuesday 18 March 2008
Jarryd Hayne will take the place of the injured Krisnan Inu when the Pirtek Parramatta Eels take on the New Zealand Warriors in Auckland on Sunday.
Hayne’s return after being stood down for round one comes after scans revealed Inu had suffered ankle ligament damage in Saturday’s win over the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium.
The Kiwi international will undergo surgery tomorrow (Wednesday) and is expected to be out of action for six weeks.
“It’s bitterly disappointing to lose Krisnan this early in the season,” head coach Michael Hagan said.
“He’s played 21 games for us since his debut and this will be his first extended break out of the game, so for it to come just when he was hitting his straps after a hard pre-season is particularly hard to take.
“However I have every confidence that Jarryd will have a big game after missing last week.
“It’s nice to be able to slot him straight back into the side and gives us some comfort heading into what will be a very tough match.”
Joel Reddy will partner Hayne in the centres after starting on the wing against the Bulldogs, while last week’s debutant Taulima Tautai shifts to the wing.
Junior Paulo and Weller Hauraki have been included on a six man bench, which will be reduced to five prior to the Eels departure for Auckland on Friday and four before kick off on Sunday.
Eels Toyota Cup coach Matt Cameron has named an unchanged side for their trip across the Tasman, while halfback Tim Smith has been named in the Wentworthville team to play the Auckland Vulcans at Ringrose Park on Sunday

Hauraki In For Hindmarsh Against Warriors
Saturday 22 March 2008
Pirtek Parramatta Eels second rower Weller Hauraki will start Sunday’s Telstra Premiership clash against the New Zealand Warriors in Auckland following the withdrawal of Nathan Hindmarsh.
Hindmarsh stayed behind in Sydney after missing two days of training during the week due to illness.
Hauraki takes his place in the starting side while Joe Galuvao will fill the spot left open on the Eels bench.
Brendan Oake is 18th man after joining the Eels flight to New Zealand on Friday.
The Eels completed their preparations with a one and a half hour training session in Auckland on Saturday morning.
The match against the Warriors is set to kick off at 4pm New Zealand time (2pm Sydney time) on Sunday at Mount Smart Stadium.
It will be preceded by the Toyota Cup clash between the Eels and Warriors, which kicks off at 2pm (NZ).

Tim Smith Wins Call Up For Knights Clash
Tuesday 25 March 2008
Tim Smith will make his first appearance for the Pirtek Parramatta Eels this Telstra Premiership season when he lines up at halfback against Newcastle on Friday night.
Smith has been in fine touch for NSW Cup team Wentworthville after recovering from off-season shoulder surgery, playing two games including leading the Magpies to victory over the Auckland Vulcans on Sunday.
Head Coach Michael Hagan said the enigmatic playmaker’s return means the Eels are one step closer to being at full strength for the first time this season.
“Tim’s an important part of the team going forward and he’s worked really hard to get to this stage,” Hagan said.
“He’s got confidence in his shoulder and has played some good footy for Wentworthville, which is what we had been hoping to happen.
“It’s a credit to Tim and also to our medical, physiotherapy and conditioning staff that he’s at this stage, which if anything came a bit earlier than originally expected.
“We’re confident he’ll slot straight back in alongside Brett Finch and also that his presence will allow Feleti Mateo a bit more room to attack.”
Nathan Hindmarsh also returns to the side after missing the match against the Warriors with a virus.
The Eels play the Knights on Friday, kick off is at 7.30pm at Parramatta Stadium.
Meantime, Eels Toyota Cup head coach Matt Cameron has named an unchanged side to the one that toppled the Warriors 26-22 on Sunday in Auckland for Friday’s clash with the Knights, that game to kick off at 5.20.
The Wentworthville team to play the Bulldogs is not currently available and will be posted at www.parraeels.com.au as soon as it is received.

Riddell Given Time As Eels Name Side For Cowboys
Tuesday 1 April 2008
Pirtek Parramatta Eels head coach Michael Hagan has included hooker Mark Riddell in an unchanged side to play the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville this Saturday night.
Riddell was hurt in Friday night’s golden point win over Newcastle, leaving the field midway through the second half with a suspected rib injury.
X-rays cleared the hooker of a fracture and he will be given until later in the week to prove his readiness.
“Mark’s probably fifty-fifty at this point in time so we’re happy to give him a few days to get right,” Hagan said.
“We don’t fly until Thursday, by which time we should know more about how he’s travelling.
“I’m fairly comfortable with our depth and we’ve got a few options available to us at this point in time so we’ll be right even if Mark doesn’t make the trip.”
Saturday’s match against the Cowboys will kick off at 8.30pm local time (9.30pm Sydney) at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

Riddell Expected To Line Up Against Cowboys
Thursday 3 April 2008
Pirtek Parramatta Eels hooker Mark Riddell is confident of overcoming a sterno-clavicular injury ahead of Saturday night’s Telstra Premiership clash with the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville.
Riddell trained strongly this week and joined the team for its flight north on Thursday.
He’ll undergo further tests when the Eels train on Friday morning with a view to being passed fit to play.
“It’s been fairly good the past few days and I’ve got a few more days to get it spot on before the game,” Riddell told reporters at Sydney Airport prior to the team’s departure for Townsville.
“I had a chat to Hages and he’s happy to give me as much time as I need to get it right.
“I’m fairly confident of making the game, if I didn’t I wouldn’t be getting on the plane.”
Riddell suffered the injury early in the second half of Friday night’s one point win over Newcastle at Parramatta Stadium.
Back up rake Matt Keating got some valuable experience in Riddell’s absence and will step up to the starting side should his injury not come right.
Backrower Broderick Wright travelled with the team as 18th man.

Robinson Returns To Action For Eels Against Titans
Tuesday 8 April 2008
Second rower Chad Robinson makes his return to the NRL when the Pirtek Parramatta Eels play host to the Gold Coast Titans at Parramatta Stadium on Friday night.
Robinson missed the first four rounds of the 2008 season after suffering a fractured wrist during pre-season training.
Solid form for Wentworthville in the NSW Cup has seen him called up to the Eels interchange bench, replacing Todd Lowrie.
It’s the only change made by head coach Michael Hagan for Friday’s match, which will be the Titans’ first ever outing at Parramatta Stadium.
“Chad’s made his way back through NSW Cup and his wrist has been fine, playing 50 and 80 minutes in the last two games for Wentworthville,” Hagan said.
“He has a great deal of experience and we need his work rate in defence.
“We’re certainly happy to have him back and we think he’ll do the job for us.”
Hagan said it was important to resist making wholesale changes following the Eels last start loss to the Cowboys.
“It’s vital we give the team the opportunity to get it sorted out,” he said.
“We know what this team is capable of, we just need to see it deliver on its potential and we’re confident that will happen on Friday night.”
Gates open early on Friday, with the Eels undefeated Harold Matthews Cup side taking on Manly at 2.25pm.
SG Ball follows at 3.45pm with the Eels taking on the Sea Eagles while the Toyota Cup kicks off at 5.30.
The main game kicks off at 7.45pm.

Keating To Make First Grade Debut Against Manly
Tuesday 15 April 2008
19 year old Kris Keating will make his first grade debut when the Pirtek Parramatta Eels take on the Manly Sea Eagles in their Heritage Round clash at Parramatta Stadium on Friday night.
Keating, a stand out at five eighth for the Eels undefeated Toyota Cup team through five games this season, takes his place on the reserves bench after coming in for the injured Mark Riddell.
Eels head coach Michael Hagan says the versatile youngster is ready to make the step up.
“I said at the season launch it wouldn’t be long before we saw Kris in first grade and he’s proven me right,” Hagan said.
“He’s a versatile player whose skills mean he can play hooker or in the halves equally well.
“We rely on the back up that Mark Riddell’s kicking game provides so we lose nothing in that department.
“He’s a fairly mature character too so I’ve no doubt he’ll handle the step up well.”
Riddell’s absence means the older of the Keating brothers, 21 year old Matthew, makes just his second starting appearance for the Eels after debuting against the Bulldogs in round one of 2008.
In other changes, Daniel Wagon makes his return after missing round five with a hip flexor strain, while Feleti Mateo shifts from lock to five eighth and Brett Finch from five eighth to halfback following the withdrawal of Tim Smith.
The Eels play the Sea Eagles at 7.45pm on Friday at Parramatta Stadium.
Keating’s ascent to the first grade ranks means a shuffle at Toyota Cup level, with Daniel Mortimer set to reunite with his 2007 SG Ball winning halves partner Cameron Speechley in the Under 20’s on Friday.
Speechley’s return is one of three changes made by head coach Matt Cameron, with Justin Hunt to start at fullback in place of Domenic Nasso and Owen Lauofo coming onto the wing for Taputoa Rea.
The Toyota Cup clash between the Eels and Sea Eagles kicks off at 5.30pm.

Rep Players For Eels V Panthers
Tuesday 29 April 2008
Pirtek Parramatta Eels head coach Michael Hagan has named all five of the Eels City v Country representatives in his team to play Penrith on Saturday night at CUA Stadium.
Country’s Brett Finch and Nathan Hindmarsh along with City representatives Jarryd Hayne, Feleti Mateo and Chad Robinson have all been named in a 19 man squad which also features hooker Mark Riddell, who missed the Eels round six loss to Manly with a sterno-clavicular injury.
The return of Riddell has been tempered by injury to interchange forward Josh Cordoba, who is expected to miss around six weeks after sustaining an AC joint injury in training.
Hagan says he’s hopeful all five representative players will back up after the City-Country clash.
“Ideally you’d like to get through unscathed, however it’s a big ask,” Hagan said.
“We’ve named a six man bench in an attempt to cover all options as we recognise that this is a vital match.
“Both teams are coming off the bye so both will be relatively fresh, which will help compensate for the fact we’ll have some tired legs out there as a result of City-Country.
“Penrith have been in fairly good form, they won away last start, so they’ll be tough and we know that.”
Saturday’s match is also a milestone in the career of fullback Luke Burt, who is just one point shy of his 1000 First Grade points in a career that spans some 155 games stretching back to his debut in round one of 1999.
Burt has scored 45 points from six matches in 2008, bagging two tries, 18 goals and a field goal to take his career tally onto 999 (from 76 tries, 347 goals, and one field goal).

Ben Smith To Make Long Awaited Return Against Dragons
Tuesday 6 May 2008
Ben Smith is poised to make his first Telstra Premiership appearance of 2008 after being named in the Pirtek Parramatta Eels team to play St. George-Illawarra at ANZ Stadium on Sunday.
Smith will line up alongside Jarryd Hayne in the centres for the Eels after making a successful recovery from off season knee and shoulder reconstructions.
It’s the only new addition to a squad that also features hooker Mark Riddell, who missed the Eels 26-18 round eight victory over Penrith due to an ongoing sternum complaint, and wing Eric Grothe, who has overcome concussion.
“Ben brings a lot to the table in defence and attack and we’re very glad to have him back,” Eels head coach Michael Hagan said.
“He’s worked incredibly hard to get to this stage and has had to overcome a number of setbacks, which is a testament to his strength and work ethic.
“He’s a popular member of the team and he probably doesn’t get the wraps he deserves.
“I have no doubt we’re yet to see the best of Ben Smith and I’m looking forward to what he has to offer the team for the remainder of the season.”
Taulima Tautai, Kris Keating and Todd Lowrie have been included on an extended seven man interchange bench for the clash with the Dragons, which kicks off at 3pm on Sunday.
The afternoon doubles as a Junior Rugby League appreciation day, with thousands of young players expected to be in attendance in recognition of the start of the junior club season.

Tautai Returns As Eels Prepare For Roosters
Tuesday 13 May 2008
Taulima Tautai has won a recall to the Pirtek Parramatta Eels team to play the Roosters at Parramatta Stadium on Friday night, being named at centre in place of State of Origin bound Jarryd Hayne.
Tautai’s return from a week in Toyota Cup is the only change to the side that defeated St George-Illawarra 19-18 last start at ANZ Stadium.
Eels head coach Michael Hagan said he’s pleased to be able to name such a settled side at this stage of the season.
“Taulima’s been solid for us this season and was probably unlucky to miss out last week,” Hagan said.
“He’ll add plenty this week as will the rest of the team.
“No doubt we’re disappointed for the likes of Brett Finch and Nathan Hindmarsh, missing out on Origin one, but that said we’re very happy they’ll be playing for us on Friday.
“We’re coming off a short turn around and have another bye coming up next week so it’s a nice feeling to be settled at this stage of the representative season.”
The Eels play host to the Roosters at Parramatta Stadium on Friday night, kick off 7.45pm.
Gates open at 5.20pm, and will be followed ten minutes later by the Toyota Cup clash between the fourth placed Eels and 10th placed Roosters.
